Mineral Makeup Review : Purely Cosmetics Skin Smoothing Mineral Foundation

From the moment I received the Purely Cosmetics Skin Smoothing Mineral Foundation in Maria, a deadringer shade for medium and warm skin, I’ve been wearing it for two days straight to roadtest. In this blog, you might notice that I’ve been reviewing foundations more than any mineral product ( well, I have a few blushes and eye products set to be reviewed next week ! ) because I believe that mineral makeup is amazingly life-saving in this department- the face. Even traditional makeup could not give this much flawless finish to the face like mineral makeup does, with added benefits, and being non-irritating as well!

To start with, the coverage is medium to full, with no added ickiness. What did that mean? I have encountered a few mineral foundations ( well, two ) that are so good with coverage, but when skin starts to oil up the skin feels very very icky. ( sticky ). My skin had already oiled up and all and this managed to feel fine and comfortable on the skin. It is a very buildable mineral foundation that can pass off as light to medium coverage foundation, to even full. The staying power is impressive, because yesterday, I was hurriedly applying makeup to go to a client for a meeting, and even after 5 hours worth of commuting, perspiring, and walking back and forth, I went home, looked at myself in the mirror, and still found my foundation very much intact, even when my skin was an oil mine already, which was shocking.

For the finish of Purely Cosmetics’ Skin Smoothing Mineral Foundation, it’s matte. I might say this can pass for TV makeup for it’s matte! The finish sort of reminds me of Artdeco’s Mineral Foundation, but without shimmer. It dews up as skin gets oily and makeup sets, and it helps skin not look so oily. I was only able to realize that my skin was horribly oily when I used flash to photograph myself and as that nanosecond worth of light flashed, I saw oil ( My gosh ). Going back, this mineral foundation, I can say, does not look totally like 100% skin. When built up for coverage, it sort of looks like you have makeup on, but you will be able to see that the makeup look is totally flawless and beautiful. Take a look at my sister Suzie’s face, as she used the mineral foundation in Maria, to illustrate my point.

I applied about two layers of foundation on her here. It looks totally flawless and smooth. I love it. My sister Suzie loved the foundation ( and the makeover ), and the story behind that is she was disappointed that I would be out of the country during her friend’s debut party, that I would not be able to do her makeup, that she made me play with makeup on her like what I’d apply on her during her friend’s debut party. My sister’s such a doll that she lets me practice makeup on her!

To sum up? Ladies ( and gentlemen ) , start sampling Purely Cosmetics. Their mineral foundation has three formulas, and I bet you can find something in those three choices! Tata!

Wow, your sister looks great. I checked out their website and they have very expensive samples: $5 for a tiny 3 gr jar!

I’ll take it up with Robyn. Perhaps she can arrange a mora affordable sampling scheme. She’s a reader of this blog, btw :)

Hi Nikkiz - nice to “meet” you!

Almost all of my customers order the 3 Pack Samples (either with or without the brush, depending on whether you have a good flat top foundation brush) for $12, not individual samples as they’re more cost effective and give you the opportunity to sample several shades and products.

All of our samples are packaged in 5 gram jars with a sifter rather than 1/4-1/2 tsp in baggies, which does increase the cost. On the flip side, this allows you to use all of the powder inside, rather than having a good deal stick to the baggie, and prevents you from having to transfer to jars yourself. Each jar is generously filled with a full gram, which is enough for 3-5 weeks worth of application, depending on how heavy you apply it. The only samples that come in the 3 gram jars are the custom blends, as they do not come with a sifter (so that you can mix the colors yourself in the included 10 gram jar), which still allows a full gram to fit inside.

Don’t forget, there is also the $5 discount for Sohpie’s readers on orders of $25 or more (which would be a 3 pack sample with a foundation brush or without the brush and a full size primer/silk powder/Oil Absorb) by using the coupon code themineralmakeup in the “redeem code” box on the checkout form for orders placed through August 31st.

I hope this helps. If anyone else has any questions, please do not hesitate to ask either by posting here (as Sophie said, I do read this blog daily), or emailing me at cs@purelycosmetics.com.

While large sample sizes are a thing to rave about, it also means that if a shade doesn’t match, there’s nothing much you can do about it and you’d feel the pinch when you stop using it and chuck it aside. Not every MMU company that offers inexpensive samples use bags. Many now offer the choice of bags/jars.

Thanks guys for your comments. I try very hard to listen to my customer requests, and take pride in the level of customer service I provide. So… I’m working with the idea of offering samples for a lower price in baggies for those who don’t mind using them. Before I do so, please give me your input. How about if you have your choice of larger sample sizes in a 5 gram jar as is currently on the site of 3 for $12, with an option of a much smaller amount like 1/4 tsp (about 1/3 gram) in zippies at 3 for $5?

As a totally newbeginner to MMU, I think this offer seems great!

  7. Nikkiz. - August 20th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

Yes, that’s a much better option!

DONE! I was going to put a link here directly to the samples page, but my site is down! Waaahhhhh…… Tech support at my hosting company is working on it now; sure hope it will be resolved soon. Keep checking, but yes, the 3 Pack Econo Samples are now up. :)

Phew! One potential migraine and panic attack aborted :) Whatever made my website go down is fixed. As I was saying earlier…. You ask, I act. You can find the Econo Pack of foundation samples in baggies by clicking here. Or go to http://www.PurelyCosmetics.com, click on Kits & Samples, then on Sample Sizes. Don’t forget to enter themineralmakeup in the “redeem code” box on checkout to save $5 for being one of Sophie’s readers!

Have you ever tried something to control your oil? Of course you have. silly question but lots of people don’t know this but dusting a light layer of kaolin clay onto your face just before your foundation can be very helpful. This is great for keeping minerals fresh all day! You could even dust a second layer lightly over your minerals too. Double action control. lol.
